Morning, Ottawa. Halloween lands on a Saturday, which means the whole city gets a four-day run at it. This week: a horror musical that hoses down its front rows, two very different ways to mark Day of the Dead, an Atlético playoff semi at Lansdowne and three smash burgers worth unwrapping. Costume optional, appetite mandatory.

One dish this week: smash burgers

Pressed thin on a screaming-hot griddle until the edges go lacy and crisp, then stacked with cheese that melts on contact. After two weeks of soup, it's time for something you eat with both hands. Three spots, one south, one east, one in Sandy Hill. It's not a ranking. All three appeared in the Ottawa Citizen's smash burger roundup (June 2026), and the prices below are the ones the Citizen reported; menus change, so double-check before you go.

  • Heron Smash Burgers: 1160 Heron Rd, near Bank and Heron. Top of the Citizen's June roundup, with fresh, never-frozen Canadian halal beef pressed into generously oversized patties that stay juicy. Classic $10, jalapeño chipotle $12, Oklahoma smash $15, Big Smack $16. Hours, per the Citizen: Mon and Tue 11 AM to 4 PM; Wed, Thu and Sun 11 AM to 8 PM; Fri and Sat 11 AM to 9 PM. Instagram

  • Skinny George's Smash Burgers: 2241 St. Laurent Blvd, inside a Milano's. A close second in the Citizen's roundup: three-ounce, never-frozen halal patties, with the double Skinny George, done Oklahoma onion style, at $13. Burgers run $10 to $17. Open 10 AM to 10 PM daily, per the Citizen. Skinny George's

  • No Forks Given: 191 Somerset St E, Sandy Hill. Halal three-ounce patties, with a cheeseburger at $12, bacon at $15 and an apple-brie at $16 (range $12 to $19). There's a vegan Beyond option, and Meatless Mondays make the plant burger half price. No Forks Given

Openings & closings

One goodbye this week, and no confirmed new openings.

  • Closing: The Vanitea Room, 551 Somerset St W in Centretown, pours its final tea service on Sat Oct 31 after a decade. If a proper afternoon tea there has been on your someday list, this weekend is it. (Ottawa Citizen · CTV Ottawa · The Vanitea Room)
